To parents receiving subsidy from Marin Child Care Council:

If you are receiving a child care subsidy from Marin Child Care Council, this information is meant for you.  As you may have heard, Governor Jerry Brown has proposed drastic reductions to child care subsidies for state-funded child care. These are just proposals, and nothing has been put into effect at this time.  Your child care subsidy is in danger of being reduced or eliminated however and you can do something about it.  On February 1st there will be the first of many hearings regarding these and other cuts that affect children and families.  Parents can send personal stories or attend hearings (with transportation or stipends available) to Sacramento.

Here are the scheduled hearings we know about at this time:

  • Feb 1, 2012 JOINT OVERSIGHT HEARING ASSEMBLY BUDGET SUBCOMMITTEE NO. 1 ON HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AND SENATE HUMAN SERVICES COMMITTEE MITCHELL, LIU, Chairs 1:30 p.m. — State Capitol, Room 4202 JOINT HEARING WITH THE LEGISLATIVE WOMEN’S CAUCUS AND THE CALIFORNIA COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN - SUBJECT: Falling Behind: The Impact of the Great Recession and the Budget Crisis on California’s Women and Their Families
  • Feb 29, 2012 Asm Budget Sub#1 HHS, Chair Asm Holly Mitchell will cover CalWORKs and some child care---not confirmed, please just pencil it in your calendars
  • March 1, 2012 Senate Full Budget Committee, Chair Senator Mark Leno 9:30 am or upon adjournment of floor session (whichever is later),  the full Budget Committee will have an informational hearing in Room 4203 on the Governor’s CalWORKs and Child Care Proposals and Program Redesign.  There will be time for public comment
  • March 14, 2012 Asm Budget Sub #1 HHS and Sub #2 Education, Joint hearing on Child Care---not confirmed, pencil in to your calendars

If you would like to attend one or more of the above hearings, please contact Leah Benz at 415-491-5776 and we can arrange transportation.  If you would like to submit your personal story about how having child care allows you to work or go to school, or how losing child care would affect your family, please email it to leah@mc3.org and we will see that it gets to our legislators in Sacramento.  We can fight these cuts, as we have for many years – but we need YOU to tell the story about how real people’s lives will be hurt.  If you have questions or want to talk about this – call anytime.

Also – if you are on Facebook, like Marin Child Care Council’s page (if you haven’t already) for up-to-date information about the budget.
